THE HOUR OF ACCEPTANCE OF DUA'A ON FRIDAY

Note: I (Raza Hassan) was just translating the book "Saheefah Hammaam bin Munabbih" with its sharh, and while translating I came across this hadeeth and its explanation which I thought would be beneficial If shared with everyone.

The Hour of Acceptance on the day of Friday

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "There is an hour (or a moment) of particular significance on Friday. If it happens that a Muslim is offering a prayer and invoking Allah for some good at that very moment, Allah will grant him his request."

Explanation:

This hadeeth is a proof of the virtues of the day of Friday, and there is an hour on this day which is the hour of Allaah’s special blessing and acceptance. There is a difference of opinion as to which hour that is, or when does this hour come?

According to some Sahaabah, this hour is after the prayer of Asr until the setting of sun. Sa’eed bin Jubayr has narrated this opinion from Abdullah bin Abbaas (radiallah anhu), and this is also the opinion of Imaam Ahmed and Imaam Ishaaq bin Rhwayh (rahimahumallah).

Imaam Ahmed bin Hanbal (rahimahullah) said: “From what is proven from the ahadeeth is that this hour starts after Asr and it can also be hoped for after the setting of the sun.”[Sharh us-Sunnah: 4/209, Sunan Tirmidhi: Under H. 489]

Sayyidunah Anas bin Maalik (radiallah anhu) has narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said:

“Look out for the hour on Firday from after Asr till the setting of the sun in which hope is placed.” [Sunan Tirmidhi: Kitaab al-Jumu’ah H. 489, Classed as Hasan by Al-Albaani - rahimahullah]

Sayyidunah Jaabir bin Abdullah (radiallah anhu) narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said:

“Look out for that hour (of acceptance of dua), at the last hour of Asr (meaning, the time close to the setting of the sun)” [Sunan Abu Dawood: H. 1048, Sunan Nasaa’ee: H. 1390, Mustadrak al-Haakim: 1/279, Authenticated by Imaam Haakim and Shaikh Albaani]

In some narrations, the time for this hour is said to be, when the Imaam starts the Jumu’ah Prayer, meaning, this hour comes between the starting of the Jumu’ah until the end of the Prayer. Abu Moosa Asha’ri (radiallah anhu) narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said:

“That hour occurs between the time when the Imam sits down for Khutbah till the end of Salat.” [Saheeh Muslim: Kitaab al-Jumu’ah: H. 16/853]

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abbaas (radiallah anhu) that:

“Verily that hour is between the Adhaan until the Imaam’s finishing of the prayer”[Sharh us-Sunnah: 4/211]

And it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (radiallah anhu) that:

“And that hour is during the sitting of the Imaam from the Minbar” [Sharh us-Sunnah: 4/211]

Haafidh Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has explained these narrations in detail in Fath ul-Baari (2/415-420), and has narrated forty three (43) sayings of the Fuqaha and Ulama regarding this.

Imaam Shawkaani narrated the opinion of Allamah Ibn Muneer (rahimahullah) with the following words:

“Verily the benefit in keeping this hour and the night of Qadr as a secret, is that the people would perform abundant Nafl Prayers and ask duaas from Allaah in search for them. Like this, that hour will certainly be acquired at some point. If these hours were made known then people would sit idle and only do worship when that hour would come. Thus we are amazed on the person who has relied on having found that limited hour. The best is to reconcile between all the opinions mentioned above and say that the hour of acceptance is that one hour which cannot be specified. Thus the one, who strives to find it in all the hours, will certainly witness it in some point.” [Nayl al-Awtaar: 3/277]

This is the most authentic opinion in this issue, that the hour of acceptance is that one hour which cannot be specified; therefore we should strive and struggle to find it in all the hours mentioned above. Wallahu a’lam.

  1. Situations which assure the Acceptance of Dua. When your Dua is Surely Accepted:

At the time of Azan (Call for Salah). (Abu Daood).
Between the Azan and the Aqaamat. (Abu Daood).
A troubled or sorrowful person’s Dua, after the Azaan’s words/part: “Hayya-alas-Salah” “Hayya-alal-Falah”, when Mo’azzan is calling for the Salah. (Hakim).
